Having her raw emotions out there for Troy to read made her feel exposed and way too vulnerable. She swallowed past the lump rising in her throat. “I wrote it.”
“Damn, Sunshine, you should be writing songs. I noticed it’s written next to We—I’m kind of surprised it’s still here.” Troy ran his hand over her words. “This isn’t about…?”
“Of course it’s about us. I wrote it after we broke up.”
“After you dumped me, you mean.” His eyebrows lowered. “Wait. Why does it say, ‘but you moved on.’ That’s not about me.”
Summer crossed her arms, ready to get into the fight they should’ve had months ago. “Troy, she answered the phone at two a.m. I might have been naive, but I’m not stupid.”
He whipped around. “Who did? Who answered the phone?”
She threw her hands in the air. “Some girl. I assumed Dacey Ford—I really didn’t want to think you’d go for some random groupie, anyway. But it doesn’t really matter who. It was two a.m., she was wasted, and as she so nicely informed me, you were in the shower.”
Confusion pinched his features. “I swear I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The old ache filled her chest, stealing her breath. “You’re honestly going to stand there and lie to my face? Why else would some girl answer your phone if she wasn’t with you?”
“There were always tons of people in the suite I shared with Felix and Kevin in Los Angeles—you remember how hard Scar Tissue partied, and they’d show up with huge groups of people just about every night. Almost anyone could’ve answered my phone.” Troy’s intense gaze burned right through her. “Summer, I’ve loved you since I was sixteen. I tried to get over it, but I can’t. And if you broke up with me because of that, then we should still be together.”
He strode toward her, determination filling his steps. He slid his hand behind her neck, the way he’d done so many times before. His breath mixed with hers as he leaned in, his lips only inches from hers.
“Please don’t.” Her voice came out quiet, but she forced herself to keep going. “Don’t make me the cheater. I couldn’t stand to be a hypocrite.”
Troy stared, frozen like that for what seemed like forever. Heat filled every inch of her body and her heart was beating so hard it hurt. The urge to throw her arms around him and kiss him was strong. She was afraid to move, afraid of what she’d do if she didn’t keep herself focused on the fact that she already had a boyfriend.
And it wasn’t Troy.
Not anymore.
He let out a long exhale, then pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, his hand still firm behind her neck. “Okay. Then we’ll go back to being friends.”
“That’s not going to work. Obviously there’s too much—”
“Summer, I don’t even know who my real friends are anymore. All the people, everyone wants something.” He lowered his hand from her neck to her shoulder. Vulnerability flickered through his eyes.
